Michael E. Colwell, P.E.
President & Founder
As President and Founder of Colwell & Associates, Inc., Michael E. Colwell is a registered professional engineer in the State of Texas with over 40 years of experience in consulting, design engineering and project management for a variety of industrial, municipal and institutional clients. His primary experience is in the design and operation of electrical power facilities including substations, transmission and distribution, generation and system protection. Typical projects include petrochemical plants, water and wastewater treatment plants and large institutional complexes, including both new construction and expansion of existing facilities. His expertise also includes electrical systems planning and analysis, short circuit and relay coordination studies, specification writing, and cost estimating. He is experienced in acceptance and maintenance testing of electrical apparatus, forensic analysis and troubleshooting of equipment.
Prior to founding Colwell & Associates, Inc., Mr. Colwell also served as President and Managing Partner of another engineering firm and Staff Engineer assigned to the Energy Systems Planning Department of the City Public Service Board for the City of San Antonio, Texas.
Mr. Colwell holds a Bachelors of Science from Texas A&I University.
Brett A. Colwell, MBA, P.E.
Vice President
Brett Colwell serves as the Firm’s Vice President and has over 12 years of engineering design, project engineering and management experience in petrochemical plants and waterworks facilities. Brett's experience in engineering includes calculating short circuit and load flows, protective device coordination, Arc Flash evaluation and power factor correction. Motor experience includes motor selection and application, motor installation design, motor starting analysis, and adjustable speed drive systems. Design experience includes lighting design (interior and exterior), emergency power and standby systems, grounding systems, and automated controls. Brett earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi and is licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.
Margaret "Peg" Smith, MBA
Chief Financial Officer
As CFO for Colwell & Associates, Inc.,
Margaret "Peg" C. Smith is responsible for administering the corporate accounting function. Peg has over 40 years of experience in the engineering and construction industries. As CFO, Peg is responsible for CAI's financial accounting, internal controls, project cost accounting and tax preparation. She assists with contract review and insurance procurement, as well as manages employment-related matters and benefits administration. Ms. Smith has a Bachelors degree in Accounting and a Masters of Business Administration.
